Liz English is a West Sussex based artist obsessed with colour. Having spent the last twenty years travelling between Italy, Kuwait and the UK, arriving in Kuwait the critical difference she felt between these environments was colour or more precisely the absence of it. Her art is a direct reaction to this and a realisation of the importance of colour and nature to her mental and emotional well being. Now back in West Sussex this continues to inform her practice.
Whether painting an abstract, landscape or still life, colour is always the starting point. Recreating the vibrancy and warmth of Italy or childhood memories in the UK painting was a way to transport herself back to those surroundings to feel those colours, experience that natural environment and continues to be so. Almost always flowers are involved.
Liz paints with acrylics, building layers of colour and detail, sometimes using freeform embroidery and collage to add texture and surface interest. Increasingly on a larger scale so the impact is even greater.
