Wet and needle felted wool fibres. This is a self portrait from the 1960s, aged about 4. It is inspired by a small black and white photograph taken by my father in the garden of the British Embassy in South Africa. I had stepped away from my mother and therefore look quite alone, holding my handbag over my arm, just like the stylish privileged white women I see around me. I am an only child and have always loved handbags and accessories, so this feels very much ‘me’.
